Drug Uses
Protonix is used to cure erosive esophagitis or severe erosion of the esophagus caused by stomach acids rising back into the esophagus continually.
Usage
You may take Protonix with or without a meal. But ensure that you swallow the capsule whole without crushing or chewing it.
Missed Dose
You should try and take your doses on time taking care not to miss any. But if you do miss a dose, then skip it and continue with your regular dose. But do not take a double dose.
Storage
Store it at room temperature.
Overdose
Very little is known about a Protonix overdose. But seek medical attention immediately if you suspect an overdose.
More Information
The drug may cause light-headedness, dizziness, and faintness in some people. Do not consume alcohol along with the drug. Do not drive or handle heavy machinery until you know how to react to the drug. Do not use unless prescribed.
Warnings/Precautions
If Protonix gives you an allergic reaction, you'll be unable to use it.
Protonix has been known to cause several extremely rare--but very serious--side effects, including severe allergic reaction, severe swelling of the face and throat, eye damage, dangerous skin reactions, and inflammation of the pancreas. Seek emergency care immediately if you begin to have difficulty breathing or swallowing, or begin to develop blisters, eruptions, or peeling skin.
If you have a liver condition, make sure the doctor is aware of it. A dosage adjustment may be needed for anyone with serious liver disease.
Protonix has not been tested for safety or effectiveness in children.
If Protonix is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Protonix with the following:
Ampicillin (Omnipen)
Iron
Ketoconazole (Nizoral)
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Possible Side Effects
Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Protonix.
More common side effects may include:
abdominal pain,
burping,
diarrhea,
gas,
headache,
insomnia,
nausea,
rash,
vomiting.
